We have gladly compiled an extensive list of weather resources all in one place for your enjoyment and convenience. Please be aware that Wind and Weather conditions can change rapidly in the desert southwest and we do advise you to check all local forecast's before venturing out on Lakes Mead and Mojave to enjoy water sports. Very strong and gusty winds are not uncommon, as well as rocky and difficult to launch & land beaches top it all off. We have pictures of gusts in excess of 80 knots taken from Boulder Beach the day Lake Mead Marina was blown away and many boats were sunk. So have fun jump high, carve hard, help someone, be safe, laugh lots, and never be afraid to try something new and exciting. Most importantly take time to smile and stop taking life so seriously! *REMEMBER....This is only a TEST....

What is Kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing is a difficult and relatively dangerous sport, and lessons are highly recommended for anyone looking to start out. Many people under-estimate the amount of power generated by a kite. Since a kite is moving on its own, unlike the sail of a boat, it is generating its own wind in addition to the ambient wind. One may kitesurf in winds as low as five knots, and with proper experience, may surf in winds in excess of forty knots. Winds with gusts of more than thirty knots should be considered very dangerous, however, and treated with extreme caution. People have died while kitesurfing, usually when a rogue gust propels an unwilling surfer over land and into a building or power lines; though kitesurfers have also been blown out to sea to drown. Please use respect and kite safely at our few descent local beaches (*ask locals if unsure about ANYTHING) and have fun.

We have been told by the NPS person in charge of repairs that they will not be fixed since they cannot locate parts for the outdated Weather Talker units they have been using and they currently have no idea if or when new ones will be installed to replace them.

WE NEED YOUR HELP FOR FIXING WINDTALKERS ON OUR LOCAL LAKES

Please be aware that many of the ancient and outdated Wind Talkers are broken and or are placed next to marinas in protected coves. Actual wind speeds on the open water is usually stronger. If you would like to see this changed where the Wind Talkers are working and moved to accurate forecasting locations (Remote systems can send data signal to base up to 7 miles, meaning points, buoys, etc. will work excellent.) and updated to latest technology so they are not always breaking down. (In fact the Wind Talker at Boulder Beach is broken and the unit is so old that they cannot purchase parts to repair it.)

Monitoring 162.55Mhz, or the standard marine radio weather radio channels will give you a general forecast for the Lake Mead area. Also if you are near the Alan Bible visitor center, Temple Bar ranger station, or Katherine Landing on Lake Mojave you can tune into AM610 for weather forecast information.
